Hi Byron, thanks for participating in Staff Spotlight. So tell me, where are you from?
I was born in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa - My family immigrated to New Zealand just over 20 years ago. Since then I’ve lived all over the South Island, and finally put down some roots in Rolleston.
When did you join Webtools?
Originally I joined Webtools early 2014, We shared a tiny office with SwitchMe in the Hornby industrial sector. I cut my teeth at Webtools on a number of bespoke applications for NZ energy retailers like Meridian, Energy Online and Genesis Energy and learned a lot during this time.
I left Webtools at the end of 2016, but recently returned, and the company has grown a lot! It’s a pretty cool feeling to see tools I built 5 years ago that are an integral part of their respective organisations, and still being actively developed.
What is your role within Webtools?
My official role is Development Team Lead for our Australian division.
I work remotely with our Melbourne office designing and building systems mostly focused on the Australian energy and utilities markets.
What is your favourite aspect of your job?
There are a lot of unique challenges to my job, which is one of the reasons I’ve kept doing it all these years. I really enjoy technical problem solving, learning new technologies and designing systems well so they can be extended easily in the future.
Beyond scratching my own itch for technical problem solving, I’ve been enjoying a number of other great perks that come with the job.Such as; a modern office with free parking in the CDB, fully-stocked kitchen & beer fridge, good coffee, constant food and drink shouts..
Did I mention that a number of us are being sent to LaraconAU 2019 later this month?
What's the coolest thing you're working on right now?
I’ve always got a few projects on the go but the one I’m most excited about right now is UCONX. In collaboration with a handful of energy retailers we’ve built a tool that streamlines the process of quotation and on-boarding customers of various utilities. It handles the complexities of national and regional regulations, saving utility providers a lot of money while ensuring they can offer their customers the most competitive rates possible.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
We’ve got a 5 month old baby boy at home right now so outside of work he’s keeping me really busy!
When I do have spare time, you might find me flying one of my FPV quadcopters, landscaping, or tinkering on some project in the garage.
